Cat Wood holding a caribou antler in Denali National Park

Hi, my name is Cat Wood. I am a wildlife biologist and photographer based out of both Alaska and the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. At least, those are two places that I find my heart tied to.

When I was a child, I always knew I wanted to work with animals and felt a connection to the outdoors. I took a trip to Yellowstone with family at a young age, and immediately I felt a connection to the wilderness there. I grew up playing with film photography and exploring my connection to the world by capturing moments of my experiences. One summer I took an internship in Juneau, Alaska, and I experienced what it was like to fish for salmon right next to coastal Alaskan brown bears. That moment changed my life forever. I bought a telephoto lens for my camera, and the rest was history.

When it comes to my biological interests, I find myself fascinated with the wildlife of the tundra, and how animals survive in harsh conditions. I work with mountain lions in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, with pikas and their interactions in alpine ecosystems, and on a bear behavior project which is part of a greater study on the ecology of animal and human interactions with the road in Denali National Park.

My work has been published in scientific publications and magazines, including the International Association for Bear Research and Management publication Ursus, Alaska Magazine, and Wyoming Wildlife.
